 Q.How do I create a signature in Outlook 2007?
ACreating an HTML signature in Outlook 2007 is no longer easy. You will need to be experienced at editing configuration settings. I can't make these directions any simpler, if you are unsure try asking a friend with more experience to help.

There is no option in Outlook 2007 to install a signature file, and you can't directly paste HTML into the Edit Signature dialogue as it will display as text not an image. What you can do is, place an HTML file directly into the Signature folder in your hidden Microsoft Application data.

When you create a signature in Outlook 2007 it creates 3 files (.htm, .txt and .rtf). You can replace the .htm file with your own html file.

To create a signature in Outlook 2007:

  1. Go to Tools / Options / Mail Format.
  2. Click on Signatures.
  3. Click on New.
  4. Give your signature a name eg. daisypath.
  5. Click on OK
  6. You don't need to put anything into the signature, we are just doing it so that Outlook creates the files it needs. Click on OK and you are done.
  7. Close Outlook
Locate your signature folder:
In a "Run" prompt (you will find "Run" in your start menu or by typing Windows Key+R),
  • for XP type %userprofile%\Application Data\Local\Microsoft\Signatures
  • for Vista type %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Signatures

Your signature folder will now open. It will be something similar to:
C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Signatures\
or
c:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Signatures

You should see 3 files created for your signature. (daisypath.htm, daisypath.txt and daisypath.rtf) If you don't see the file extensions go to Tools / Folder Options / View and uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.

Replace the HTML file created by Outlook:
Create an HTML file as per these instructions and use it replace the .htm file in your signature folder. Make sure you call it the same name as Outlook did eg. daisypath.htm

To start using your new signature

  1. Restart Outlook.
  2. Click on New
  3. Click on Signature and select your signature from the list. Your signature will now be added to your mail.

NB To have your Daisypath signature display as an image, you need your email to be in HTML format. To check for this, click on Options in the Mail dialogue. Make sure HTML is highlighted above Format.

Q.How do I add a Wedding days to my Windows Mail? It is similar to Outlook.
 AFor Windows Mail:
  1. Create an HTML signature file as per these instructions.
  2. Open Windows Mail.
  3. Select Tools from the File Menu, and click on Options.
  4. Click on the Signatures tab.
  5. Make sure the boxes next to Add signatures to all outgoing messages and Don't add signatures to Replies and Forwards are checked.
  6. Under Signatures click New.
  7. Under Edit Signature click the radio button next to File.
  8. Click Browse and find your Daisypath html.
  9. Click OK and you are done.
NB: Your Daisypath sig may not be visible when you compose new messages. However, it will be visible when your messages are received. Try sending a message to yourself as a test. You should see your Daisypath sig when you receive the test message.
Q.Can I have two (or more) tickers in my email signature in Outlook?
AYes, follow the instructions for Creating an HTML signature file as appropriate for your email program. The only change is to place a line break tag
between the HTML code snippets, so that they sit one on top of each other rather than side by side.

For instance, for an Expecting a Baby announcement above an Anniversary announcement the HTML would look like this:

Q.In Outlook Express my Wedding days does not update, it stays on the same days. How do I get it to refresh?
AThis is usually caused by Outlook Express caching the Wedding days image. Outlook Express sends a copy of the image with the email when you send it, depending on your Internet Connection settings it may just send an old copy of the image rather than getting the latest image from Daisypath.

Outlook Express shares the Internet Connection setting with Internet Explorer, as you will see if you to to Tools / Options / Connection in your Outlook Express. If you click on Change... then select the General tab, then Settings.. under Temporary Internet files you can see how often your browser is set to Check for new versions of stored pages.

I have mine set to Automatically, if you have this and your ticker image isn't updated you could try Every visit to the page.

By the way, you can get to the same dialogue box through IE by going to Tools / Internet Options etc.

Of course, all this is only based on my use of Outlook Express. If you need more advice you are probably better to check with Microsoft support.

Q.When I try to install my HTML signature file, Outlook gives me the following error warning the signature file is not a valid text file the signature has been removed. How do I fix it?
AThis might happen if you used a rich-text editor such as Word or Wordpad to create your HTML file. It is important that you use a plain-text editor such as Notepad because rich-text editors add a lot of redundant text that can break the HTML or make it too big to install as a signature.

Notepad comes standard with all installations of Windows, you will find it in your Start menu under Accessories or just click on Run in your Start menu and type in notepad. Then click on OK and it will start up.

The next thing to check is that you put quotes around the name of your signature file when you save it. eg. "wedding_ticker.html". Otherwise notepad will save it as a text file eg. wedding_ticker.html.txt and if you have "hide common file extensions" on in your Explorer settings (which is the default) it will show up in Explorer as wedding_ticker.html but Outlook will read it as a .txt file.
